Canada eliminates USA at World Cup of Hockey

TORONTO — The Americans brought a skating team to the 2014 Olympics in Russia and had disappointing results.

They switched to a gritty team for the World Cup of Hockey and now have been eliminated from medal contention after two games.

USA Hockey may be out of options for this group of players.

The Canadians defeated the Americans 4-2 to guarantee Canada (2-0) and Team Europe (2-0) a spot in the semifinals. The Americans will go home Thursday after playing a meaningless game against the Czech Republic.

Dating back to the 2014 Olympics, America’s forwards, which includes Patrick Kane, Zach Parise, Max Pacioretty, Blake Wheeler, David Backes and T.J. Oshie, have scored one goal in the last four games of tournament competition. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh and Oshie scored USA’s goals.

In the Olympics, the Americans lost 1-0 to Canada in the semifinals and 5-0 to Finland in the bronze medal game. Team Europe beat USA 3-0 in the preliminary round of this tournament.
